Years ago, I lived in New York City and had a job that required me running around town several days each week.
My favorite client trip was to a shop in Greenwich Village – a good excuse to be in one of my favorite neighborhoods and if timed right, grab lunch and ‘be downtown’.
Every single time I’d come up the subway stairs I was struck by the same thought: “who are all these people sitting around in cafes during the day? I want to be one of them!” Did they work the night shift? Did they have trust funds? Did they slip through some black hole I’d yet to find?
I knew somehow, some day, I would figure out a way to be a daytime café dweller. Fast forward 20 years. I’ve been a business owner all this time and I’m free to go to the café whenever I want and work from there.
I’m also free to get out of inclement weather for the month of January and work in a warm climate. I can say yes to invitations mid-week events – during the day. I can take a yoga class whatever time of day I choose.
And, I can decide on a sunny warm August afternoon to go out for lunch and stay out.
As long as I have my schedule managed and deliver what I promise on time, I have all the freedom in the world to come and go as I please. What do I do? I’m a copywriter.
Someone who is paid to write marketing and ultimately make money for my clients. As long as I have my laptop and my cell phone, I’m in business wherever I find myself.
When my partner wants to take a 3 week vacation to Tuscany, I’ll usually speed up my schedule so I have the 3 weeks free. But if not, throw in the laptop and I can work in a piazza while sipping espresso and experiencing the world go by – 6000 miles from home.
I love what I do. I love the freedom and the flexibility. I love helping clients realize their goals and I enjoy the intellectual challenge of creating content that serves a real purpose – often from just a few good ideas and some insight.
Interestingly, this is a profession ANYONE can learn. You need to have a good insight into people, you need to be willing to learn some skills and hone your craft, but that’s true of anything new you might take up.
For now, at any rate, you can become a copywriter without an expensive advanced degree and set yourself up to earn a professional level income and enjoy your life in the process. I can’t recommend it enough.
Oh, just one more thing. I’m writing this in my deck chair under a shade tree on my two acre park-like property. I couldn’t have imagined this in my urban days – but I like it even better than a café. It’s yours for the taking – any way you choose it.
