There are so many reasons to love being a copywriter. One thing obvious to me that may seem strange – the projects have a beginning, middle and an end.
As a business owner, I’ve worked hard and long on projects that seem to go on and on and on and on…you get the idea.
Some pieces of copy take longer to get just right than others, but when they’re done and ready to be put to work, they’re finished and complete, paid for and over.
Now, that’s not to say that some pieces don’t get rewritten, freshened up, re-tested, re-positioned, all of that is true. Yet, there’s something I love about a completed job – it’s hugely satisfying.
I love the creativity involved. You constantly come up with new ideas, new angles and different ways of looking at products and services.
It’s a pleasure to bring a fresh perspective to a client, especially one that results in more business and a bigger bottom line. They’re grateful, you’re a hero and everyone is making money. There’s a great flow there.
The pay is great. As you improve your skills, you can command bigger fees
Use your marketing know-how as a consultant to your clients and add immeasurable value and new perspective. All your work is confidential of course, but you have a bird’s eye view of many different businesses and business models and that perspective has genuine value in the marketplace.
Even if you don’t charge a fee for the consulting, but build it into the value you bring to the table, you’ll be richly rewarded – in results and job satisfaction.
Copywriting allows the ultimate freedom and flexibility
It can be done from anywhere. Learn to manage your days and your schedule and you can call the shots. Work in jeans and a t-shirt, eat lunch in your back yard or with your feet up on the table and enjoy the lack of office politics.
I share my couch with my dog, sometimes she gets annoyed if I want to edit a piece at the other end when she’s sleeping. I can handle that. One of us gets off – end of office positioning.
You can start a copywriting career with the basics, build your skills and position yourself very well – better than many professions, for a fraction of the investment in education as long as you have the determination to improve as you go.
If any of this appeals to you, you may just have figured out what’s next for you. I highly recommend it.
